Chamber of Telecommunications Company CEO Ken Ashigbey called for the creation of local social media platforms and applications.
This is in response to the unexpected shutdown of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram yesterday for six hours following a faulty configuration change on those platforms.
Mr Ashigbe said the majority of businesses in Ghana depend on these social media platforms for doing business. As a result, the closure had dire consequences for their business operations, including financial losses.
He raised concerns over the monopoly on social media, citing Monday’s event as a case in point, adding that local social media platforms would have saved the day.
“I hope we all learn from all of this and this is where it bares the need for a lot more local content, we need to develop our own social media platforms as a continent so that we have some level of independence so that when these things happen we are not affected like we were …. once you use these networks you are using data so it would definitely impact the usage during those 6 hours of failure of these social media platforms, ”Mr. Ashigbe said.
Regarding the ongoing re-registration of the SIM card, Mr. Ashigbe said the process is going smoothly with positive feedback from telecom operators.
