A tiny creature, found on the streets of Sydney, Australia, has baffled biologists, academics and social media users. Harry Hayes was jogging on Monday morning when he came across the creature, Ladbible reports. The city has been hit by heavy rain in recent days, but the bizarre-looking animal was not found in a flood-prone area. Instead, Mr Hayes found it while jogging in the Sydney suburb of Marrickville.
“My gut says it’s kind of an embryo but with Covid, WW3 and the floods [going on right now] it could very well be an alien,” he said.
Mr Hayes posted a video of the creature on Instagram, from where it spread to other social media platforms like Twitter. The footage shows him poking the creature with a stick, but it remains motionless.
News of the odd-looking creature – which many on social media have described as an ‘alien’ – started going viral after Lil Ahenkan, a popular Australian influencer, shared his picture on Instagram. “What is that?”
she captioned the photo.
“Shark embryo maybe? Or some other sea creature,” one person speculated. “It’s an alien,” said another.
Even biologists were puzzled by the strange discovery. Biologist Ellie Elissa reposted the photo on Instagram, asking for help identifying the creature. “What the hell is this? I thought it was an opossum/glider embryo, but I have no context or scale and none of my peers may be okay,” she wrote.
Hello world. What is this thing? I was thinking opossum/glider embryo but I have no context or scale and none of my peers can agree. What is that? #mysteryblobhttps://t.co/86DAwrtQpD

A cuttlefish embryo, a germinating seed, and a mutated tadpole were all ruled out as possible answers. When Ladbible contacted the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales to identify the creature, none of the academics were able to identify it either.
Do you have any guesses as to what the creature might be?
