Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has revealed he and his teammates are ready to boycott social media if more is not done to tackle online abuse.

Earlier this year, football players and clubs as well as governing bodies shut down their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts for three days in order to “Insist that social media companies must do more to eradicate hate online”.

And the Chelsea captain spoke to CNN Sports and revealed that he and his teammates are ready to start over.

When asked if he and his teammates would consider boycotting social media websites again, he said: “If we have to, yes of course. Social media is part of our lives and as I said before, clubs, the Premier League, players, we are part of it.

“We have millions of subscribers from all over the place, but if this is the only way to get the attention we want and get the engagement of the social media platform to improve it, sure enough. You know, we did it a few months ago and now we’re waiting (if) we have to do it again.

“At that point, when we decided to boycott, it was something very quick. So it’s not something you need a few months to work on. I think if the action is necessary, yes (we will). “

Whether players will boycott social media again remains to be seen, but it could happen sooner rather than later.
