With the holidays just around the corner and the end of the year just a week away, it’s no surprise that the past week has been fairly quiet. The only notable exception, however, was Trip.com, which released its financial data on Thursday, December 16.

Trip.com Increases European Market Share Using Superior Technology

Leveraging its increasingly superior technological platform (especially around flight search), the Chinese platform Trip.com is making huge strides in increasing its European market share. Not only is Trip.com’s in-house flight search engine more efficient in providing users with appropriate fares and routes, the systems’ ability to offer ancillary products and services is attracting the attention of European airlines. (Trip.com owns Travelfusion, one of the few technology providers that bundles airline NDC content for further distribution.) Trip.com also plans to be one of the premier online booking platforms in deploy Hopper’s price freeze tool (allowing users to pay to freeze rates for up to 14 days) to users in North America and Europe under a previously announced deal.

Saber Adds Veteran Travel Management Company

Last week, Saber announced that Kurt Ekert, former chairman and CEO of travel management company CWT, would become chairman of the global distribution system operator (GDS). According to the announcement, Ekert will oversee all aspects of Saber’s business and technology operations and report to current CEO Sean Menke. Prior to his role at CWT, Ekert spent five years as Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of GDS competitor Travelport. Business as usual for Saber or perhaps further proof that Saber hopes to play a much larger role in travel distribution, not just GDS?

Have a good week. Happy Holidays.
